It's Alive-ing Space: Bedroom with a Bed

We've been talking up all the changes in our apartment lately, and we have a few more pictures and details to share today.

First, it's been a long time in coming, but I finally drew a floor plan of our whole apartment, complete with furniture in the new configuration, so you can have a better idea of what you're looking at as a whole:

Calculating square footage is a tricky business, especially with such a crazy footprint as this, but I did it as best I could and came up with about 962 square feet.  There's not really a way to show where all the sloped ceilings are in the floor plan, but you can see how many we're dealing with in the photos on our Tour the Space page (which will be updated with the new layout pictures soon).  It definitely makes it interesting to come up with a good space plan with such a unique shape to every room!  I've always been a floor plan maker, and I think it's definitely helpful when trying to visualize a new layout, so when Chris came up with the idea of switching our office and bedroom, I had to draw out a floor plan so I could "see" it before I agreed.

The next order of business is one new part of our apartment that we have been working very hard on and are very excited about: the bed!

Can you guess which side is mine and which is Chris's?

It's in a cute little nook in the new room looking out over the whole space, which is actually the only spot it could physically fit in the room with nightstands.  I like the way the room almost curls around our bed, but it does make for a lot of empty wall space where we can't hang any art.

We've been living without an actual bed (just a mattress and boxspring) for several years, and now that we have a bed I can't believe we waited so long.  We were casually looking for a bed on and off for a long time (it's amazing how many ugly beds there are out there), but we kicked the search into high gear recently and finally found a simple wood platform bed on Craigslist for $100.  That same day we made another big purchase:  the awesome Marimekko duvet from Crate & Barrel.  It took forever to find a comforter we both agreed on, and we just love this one.  I didn't even realize it until Chris pointed it out, but we have matching wash cloths and a hand towel in our bathroom with a green background that our friends gave us as a housewarming gift!

Bella loves the new bed, too.

Our new bed doesn't have a headboard, so I pinned up one of my homemade felt ball garlands to outline a headboard area around the pillows, and I just love how it looks.  Speaking of pillows, we've gone a little pillow crazy on the bed in a very good way...

To add to the headboard illusion, we picked up a couple Euro square pillows and navy blue shams (from Target and Bed, Bath, and Beyond respectively), then there are two standard size down pillows we already owned with IKEA-hacked covers I sewed using my envelope pillowcase method with this $20 IKEA blanket, which gives them crazy ruffly texture that is hard to see in the pictures, but looks awesome.  The blanket was a little see-through since it's a mesh-like fabric, so we picked up a couple plain white pillowcases while we were at IKEA to put underneath.  Our Tempurpedic head pillows are stacked below the white pillows with brand new IKEA pillowcases made for the shape of ergonomic pillows (genius!), then there are two throw pillows with covers I sewed with the envelope method again in grey fabric (you can't see it in the pictures, but the fabric is actually covered with tiny white dots, which makes it more interesting in a subtle way) I picked up on sale from Jo-Ann Fabric for $11 total, and the last little guy is this cable knit pillow we bought with a Christmas Etsy gift card.

It seems like a crazy amount of pillows, but most of them actually get used on a regular basis, and they look pretty darn awesome, if I do say so myself.  Assembling all those pillows has felt a bit like my job lately, I've been spending so much time on it, so sorry about that absurdly long paragraph about pillows; I just can't help myself.

We're planning to put the finishing touches on the rest of our apartment and take new pictures of it all this weekend, as there have been a surprising amount of changes around here, so we should have a huge "It's Alive-ing Space" post next week with a full tour!

What do you think of our bed?  Do you use as many pillows as we do?  I didn't get into any nightstand details, but what do you think of them?  Are you a floor plan maker like me?
